Globally, “gender equality and female empowerment” remain a major issue on the development agenda particularly in relation to the areas of health, family, work, and education. And so much so that this remains one of the major Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) before it. Within this broad context, and in particular relation to education, there has been a lot of scholarly work as it relates to ensuring female access to education at all levels: primary/elementary, secondary/high school and tertiary/college. Relatedly, there has also been a major focus on female involvement in the STEM field area as well as the gendered nature of the labor market itself. However, one area that has not received as much scholarly and policy attention has been the challenges many women face in relation to tenure and promotion at the university level of education.
