Acknowledgments The subject of this book grew out of my earlier work on eighteenth-century France. Women and Politics in the Age of the Democratic Revolutions, coedited with Darline Levy and Mary Durham Johnson, includes documents that raised the question of women in legislatures, which was promptly dismissed. My own later work, Political Alignment in the French National Assembly, 1789–1791, furthered my interest in the attitudes and behavior of men elected to represent the nation.
