he “holy grail” of medical education rests on three pillars: engaging the learner, T providing important clinical information, and ensuring knowledge retention. Colin Kaide’s and Christopher San Miguel’s LEARNing Rounds accomplishes all three and more! The book starts by engaging the reader with a case, based on an actual patient encounter from the authors’ real-life practice, encouraging us to consider how would we have further evaluated and managed the complaint. Clinical information is thoroughly described with priming questions, background on the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and an exploration of how to “work up” the patient and concludes with recommendations for treatment. But none of this matters if the reader does not remember the lessons described—enter the “hook” of LEARNing Rounds. To improve knowledge retention, the authors have imbedded throughout each chapter “orienting” boxes with key points, tips on pattern recognition, pictures, and a case discussion by national emergency medicine experts.
