Foreword

The European population is aging rapidly, what never happened in the past. Because of increasing longevity and low fertility, the share of oldest olds in the society is increasing. As a consequence of a roughly invariant age at retirement, the balance between active and non-active populations will grow in favor of the second involving numerous socio-economic implications. Nevertheless, reaching the age of 100 years or being centenarian remains exceptional and it attracts a lot of attention from both scientists and the general public. As a matter of fact, reaching 100 years is not different from 99 or 98 but our numerical system, introduced by the Romans more than two millennium ago, makes this round age a unique milestone.
