SSRI discontinuation syndrome in elderly patients: 2 case reports Two elderly women developed serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) discontinuation syndrome after withdrawal of citalopram [dosages and duration of treatments not stated]. An 89-year-old woman with depression was hospitalised after experiencing a syncope. On admission, a Nursing Delirium Assessment Screen (NuDesc) revealed a score of 0. She became agitated on day 2, and reassessment revealed a NuDesc score of 7, consistent with delirium. Her condition persisted despite haloperidol administration. A medication review on day 3 revealed that she had been receiving citalopram at home, and the drug was restarted. Her condition returned to baseline the following day, her NuDesc score decreased to 0, and she was discharged. A 69-year-old woman was hospitalised after contracting a subdermal haematoma in a fall. Her therapy with citalopram [therapeutic indication not stated] was held on admission. She continued experiencing severe headaches, nausea, dizziness, anxiety, tremor and flu-like symptoms on day 5 [time to onset not clearly stated]. Citalopram was restarted, and her symptoms resolved with 24 hours. Author comment: "Our cases [of SSRI discontinuation syndrome] occurred with the discontinuation of citalopram. Although there were other potential contributing factors to our patients’ conditions, multiple interventions were made with little improvement in symptoms. There was a temporal relation between resuming the drug and resolution of symptoms."
