Abstract

Increasing food security of smallholder farmers is critical to achieving sustainable development. Consequently, studies and government policies have excessively focused on increasing food availability, while food accessibility remains relatively unexplored. A quantitative survey approach was adopted to examine food security (access to food) of 378 smallholder farmers in the rural Adansi North District of Ghana, with the aid of the household food insecurity access scale. Adaptation strategies of smallholder farmers were examined as well as the relationship between food security and adaptation. A simple random sampling technique and questionnaire survey were employed.
