was shown by Speich ~ and Henon z that the compound Fe2Ti , which p r e c i p i t a t e d in the f o r m of p l a t e l e t s d u r ing the aging of a s u p e r s a t u r a t e d s o l i d solution of t i t a nium in a i ro n , did not c o n t r i b u t e v e r y much to the h a r d e n i n g of the alloy. Wasmuht,~ Henon 2 and, at the s a m e t i m e as us,4 J a c k s have shown that a c o n s i d e r a b l e s t r u c t u r a l h a r d e n i n g can be o b s e r v e d when the f e r r i t e containing s i l i c o n and t i t a n i u m in s o l i d solution is aged a f t e r the quench. We have u s e d this c o m b i n e d e f f e c t of s i l i c o n and t i t a n i u m to obtain s t r u c t u r a l h a r d e n i n g in f e r r i t i c s t e e l s r i c h in c h r o m i u m , in f e r r i t i c - m a r t e n s i t e s t e e l s r i c h in c h r o m i u m and m a n g a n e s e , and in c o m p l e t e l y m a r t e n s i t i c s t e e l s r i c h in m a n g a n e s e . This study is c o n c e r n e d with the e v o l u t i o n of quenched s u p e r s a t u r a t e d s o l i d s o lution d u r i n g aging.
