The Impetus for Writing I first moved to the Arabian Peninsula in the fall of 1997, a newly-minted Ph.D. with a job at the new (not quite yet built) American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. I walked over lines of sleeping workers to get to class, ordered 100s of books for the library, learned how to teach without a textbook and tried to get my bearings.
