PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 867, p9 - 28 Nov 2020 Costs of liver procurement, transplantation and machine perfusion Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is costly but has the potential to reduce the high operative costs of liver transplantation in Canada, according to findings of a study published in PharmacoEconomics - Open. As a prelude to a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) of liver procurement and transplantation with machine perfusion in a Canadian setting, this analysis based on data from the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, LightHouse Surgical Financial System, and Alberta Health Services, estimated costs of 106 within-province liver procurements, 237 out-of-province procurements, 343 liver transplants, and the cost per run of NMP [OrganOx], from a Canadian payer perspective. Costs were lower for in-province than out-of-province liver procurement and transplantation ($30 770* vs $44 637), and increased when physician billing modifiers were included ($35 659 vs $48 076). The cost of NMP was $18 593–$20 241 per run. The total cost for in-province liver procurement, liver transplant and OrganOx was $49 363–$55 901, and the total cost for out-of-province liver procurement, liver transplant and OrganOx was $63 230–$68 318. The cost of liver transplantation was significantly lower with OrganOx than without OrganOx for in-province and out-of-province transplants (p
