Abstract Existing studies have shown the external physical environment factors, such as disorder, darkness, sexual stimulus can influence creativity, and appetite stimulus as an environmental factor can also influence the individual’s cognition and behaviors. We proposed that appetite stimulus could improve creativity, and four experiments were conducted to examine the hypothesis. Experiment 1a and Experiment 1b demonstrated that participants exposed to appetite stimulus generated more creative ideas and showed better performance in the insight problem-solving task. Experiment 2a showed that appetite stimulus could improve individual’s cognitive flexibility. On this basis, Experiment 2b further revealed that cognitive flexibility mediated the influence of appetite stimulus on creativity. These findings indicated that appetite stimulus could improve creativity and cognitive flexibility played the mediating role in the influence of appetite stimulus on creativity. Introduction Creativity is constructed by different dimensions that sharing the same line: it refers to the ability to generate original and appropriate ideas, therefore, “originality” and “appropriateness” are the key characteristics to measure the creativity (Amabile 1983). The abilities considered most relevant to creativity fall into two categories: One category is divergent thinking ability, which is manifested in the generation of ideas where variety is important (Guilford 1967). The measurement of divergent thinking is generally presented in the form of open questions, requiring participants to list as many answers as possible according to the questions. The other category is convergent thinking ability, which refers to reinterpreting and organizing what a person experiences or knows to produce new forms and patterns. Convergent thinking can be measured by insight problem which included three features: (a) the average person can finally find the answer; (b) in the process of finding the answer, people will be in a stalemate-a state of high uncertainty about how to do next; (c) after some hard work, people accompanied with an “Aha” experience

suddenly found the solution (Schooler et al. 1993). The performance in insight problem solving and responses on the divergent-thinking task are often used as an indicator to measure creativity. The factors affecting creativity are extensive. Apart from individual differences, in recent years, more and more studies have focused on the external factors, especially physical environment factors. For example, color of blue, moderate noise, dark environment, disorderly environment all can improve individual’ s creativity (Chen et
