Rightsizing, which has been much invoked in recent years, is important not only in relation to combustion engines, but also in the context of the electrical components of hybrid drives and pure electric powertrains. This is because it is ultimately the design of the system that is being optimized which determines its efficiency. This is why customized electrification solutions are essential for a wide range of applications in order to meet environmental policy goals. In addition, we need an overall perspective on electrified powertrains in order to understand the growing number of different variants, particularly in combination with combustion engines in hybrid drives. BorgWarner is offering its customers a broad range of package solutions which include all the relevant components of electric drives. This allows them to provide manufacturers with systems consisting of power electronics, gearbox and traction motor that have been designed for every potential application. AVL and Hyundai Motors Europe are working together to develop an electrified diesel engine that will be a sustainable solution for the future. They have built a vehicle which will allow them to test the real emission reductions that the concept can achieve on the road and to evaluate its suitability for volume production. In the interview, Matthias Tonn and Michael Geaney describe the electrification strategy at Ford, which will have a total of 18 electric models on the market by the end of 2021. Thomas Schneider
