DARE to be You A Systems Approach to the Early Prevention of Problem Behaviors

The DARE to be You program is not affiliated with the Drug Abuse and Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program offered through local law enforcement agencies.

Preface

The growing concern about the bleak future of many youth has produced an explosion of programs designed to reduce problem behaviors and build assets (National Research Council, 1993). Concerned citizens who want to initiate communitybased programs for youth must decide how to expend their resources in the most effective way. Some programs have a strong scientific basis and have also been proven to work (see Drug Strategies, 1999). Some have not. DARE to be You is a program that has both a conceptual foundation and is demonstrably effective in building assets that are linked to fewer problem behaviors.
