Abstract A new species of orchid, i.e. Dendrobium nageswarayanum, is described from Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The present new species is more allied to Dendrobium subansiriense Verma and Barbhuiya, but differs in having inflorescence, flowers, lateral sepals and lateral margins of lip. Detailed differences are discussed in this paper.
[1–13]. The critical study revealed that the present taxon distinctly differs from the so far known Epigeneium group taxa under Dendrobium genus and belongs to a previously undescribed species. Hence, it is described here as a new species Dendrobium nageswarayanum Chowlu (Fig. 1).
Dendrobium nageswarayanum Chowlu sp. nov Keywords Dendrobium Orchid Taxonomy
During a botanical exploration in Kurung Kumey District of Arunachal Pradesh during November 2016, a small population of interesting miniature Dendrobium belonging to Epigeneium group was located in flowering condition by the author. About 15 specimens of this taxon were collected and brought under cultivation for ex situ conservation in the botanic garden of Botanical Survey of India, Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre in Itanagar. In the first year after introduction, all the plants flowered very well, but in the following years flowering is observed very poor which may be attributed to the change in altitude between the type locality (823 m) and the introduced place (300 m). After a through morphological characterization of the taxon, identification process has been made based on types of similar species and comparative study with the specimens at leading Indian herbaria (e.g. CAL, ASSAM, ARUN, Orchid Herbarium Tipi, Arunachal Forest Herbarium, Itanagar) and consultation of different literature & Krishna Chowlu [email protected] 1
