Blood pressure spike and bradycardia in an infant: case report A 21-month-old boy developed a spike in blood pressure and bradycardia following an unintentional overdose of dexmedetomidine. The boy had undergone his fifth Tetralogy of Fallot repair surgery and was in the paediatric ICU following his surgery. His initial treatment with dexmedetomidine was a 0.5 mcg/kg/hr dose [therapeutic indication and route not stated] for approximately 1 hour which was then stopped. He was scheduled to receive a dose of cefazolin, however, he was given an 80 mcg bolus of dexmedetomidine. His blood pressure spiked to 169/89 mmHg [time to reaction onset not stated] and he was found to have bradycardia with a heart rate of 88 bpm. The boy’s blood pressure and heart rate normalised after approximately 3 hours. He had been sedated throughout this time and had no sequelae on discharge.
