Dextran/hypromellose/polyvinyl alcohol Epiphora due to lacrimal system obstruction: 2 case reports In a review of record of 18 patients (from a letter to the editor), two patients [ages and sexes not stated] were described, who developed epiphora due to lacrimal system obstruction during treatment with dextran and hypromellose (1 patient) or polyvinyl alcohol (1 patient) [dosages, durations of treatments to reactions onsets and outcomes not stated; indications not clearly stated]. The patients, who had been receiving eye drops, comprising polyvinyl alcohol [Refresh] (1 patient), or dextran and hypromellose [Genteal] (1 patient), were subjected to undergo cataract surgery. The patients continued the respective eye drops application post-surgery. Thereafter, the patients developed epiphora due to lacrimal system obstruction. In the setting of the surgery, the eye-drops were considered contributory to the epiphora due to lacrimal system obstruction. Author comment: "It is possible that any topical medication may lead to punctal or canalicular obstruction, but some present a higher risk of this." "[L]acrimal system obstruction may result from the combination of topical treatments used after their surgery". McElnea EM, et al. Lacrimal system obstruction after cataract surgery.
