The trajectory to start this study is presented in the ‘Introduction’ of this book. The study began with an attempt to understand one’s journey from an academic perspective. This book can be traced back to my fieldwork in Lianhe Village in 2005–2006, where I completed my doctoral project in the University of Essex. With time, the study has been expanded and updated with repeated visits and continuous contacts with the villagers from Lianhe. I owe my deepest gratitude to the people of Lianhe Village who willingly accepted me. They shared their life stories without reservations.
