Preface When I wrote the chapters of diving medicine as a medical student in 1994–1996, I tried to make it both easy to understand and medically profound. At that time I was a divemaster, and as I loved both scuba diving and free diving, I frequently went to the Red Sea for diving. After publishing the chapters for physiology and diving medicine, I wrote other chapters about diving history, physics and diving equipment. Being a young doctor and father at the same time, I was too busy to finish them off. Later I worked in hyperbaric chambers in Bremen and Hamburg, and then I moved to Australia and worked for years in different emergency departments. During that time, I also finished off my dissertation in medicine. Since 2007, I worked as a GP and completed my specialisation in this field. Recently, I re-discovered my book and updated it to the newest standard. I tried to make this a comprehensible, precise and compendious book.
