Foreword

In November 2014, the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering in Cairo University brought together scholars, researchers, practitioners, ministers, Governmental and Non-Governmental organizations from 15 countries to discuss and debate the responsiveness of informal urbanism. The aim was to revisit the major issues that were frequently addressed theoretically, or in practice. Looking at informal areas with different perspectives was the major goal of this meeting. It was an attempt to understand why despite all the efforts undertaken by different stakeholders, in different parts of the world, and the international financial aids from leading organizations, these areas are still are expanding, uncontrolled, and are “marginalized” either geographically, socially, or perceptually. Of course, there have been many successful endeavors, but looking at the problem, and the size of the slums, and informal areas dwellers, more serious efforts are neede
