IN recent years, there has been increased interest in the research and development of Mg-based alloys with high mechanical strength at high temperatures. The alloys belonging to the Mg-Zn-Y system are especially promising in this respect.[1–3] Depending on the Zn/Y ratio (expressed as weight percentage), different phases can form and/or coexist: a long-period stacking ordered (LPS) phase if the ratio is 0.4, a quasicrystalline I phase (Mg3YZn6) when the ratio is 6, and the coexistence of W phase (Mg3Y2Zn3) and I phase when 1.5
