SOCIAL BACKGROUND FOR LCD TECHNOLOGY First, the energy consumption, which is evaluated by CO 2 gas emission, of a computer with LCD and that with CRT is compared in Fig. 1. This life cycle assessment was done 57 Mat. Res. Soc. Symp. Proc. Vol. 559 © 1999 Materials Research Society

by a research group of NEC. [11 A computer with CRT consumes about three times larger energy compared to that with LCD in their whole life. For this reason, we have a good reason for conducting further R and D of LCDs. Now, we will try to project the future trend in electronics. Figure 2 shows a result of the investigation done by a research group of NTT; [21 a digital TV with NTSC and MPEG2 specifications and that of HDTV need the volume of information input of 10i bytes/s and 10' bytes/s, respectively, and at the same time, 102 to 103 times improvement of the capability of current microprocessor system is required. These situations will be realized by 2004 when the Fiber to the Home Project will start. eta

Regarding the fatigue of eyes and brain of a person who uses an electronic display, it is reported that the higher the frame rate the lower the fatigue. Therefore it is necessary to explore a new display technology for high frame rate more than 60 Hz. Furthermore, in the future optical computing will be developed; our LCOD is shown to be useful for implementing optical logic gates. LCD TECHNOLOGY IN THE NEAR FUTURE Figure 3 illustrates the development of LCD technology in terms of information content and display size in the three categories of LCD technology. In the multimedia network era, all the those of LCD will be utilized. Other important LCD technologies, which are not shown on this figure, are miniature LCD and moving holography using LCD technology. We place emphasis on PS-FLCD as a key device for these various applications.
