My exposure to the underworld of archives occurred fortuitously in 2005. I had completed a full day of dissertation writing and so rewarded myself to some leisure reading at the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. Upon entering the vaulted ceiling reading room, I immediately approached the staff member on duty at the reference desk. Feeling both nervous and excited, I asked him if the library had any printed sermons from the Mexican-American War, 1846–1848. He paused suspiciously and then made a call to the Director of Cushing Library. He then told me that I would need to return the next day to speak directly with the Director about my request. Apart from stirring my frustration, I agreed to come back and speak with him—if for any reason, at least to express my disappointment with reading-room procedures.
