PREFACE
Studies of material instabilities, representing basic tools for predicting fracture initiation and failure in various materials, have been the subject of a great amount of scientific work in the last years. The researchers in this field are often facing the difficulty of finding a firm and sufficiently general conceptual framework for examining the fundamental question of stability of solutions at the level of a material element. This volume is intended to fill the gap by collecting recent theoretical developments in the area of material instability in elastic and plastic solids along with related analytical and numerical methods and applications. The existing different approaches to instability phenomena in metal single crystals, polycrystals and in geomaterials are presented with the emphasis laid on mutual relations and on unifying concepts. This monograph is made up of Lecture Notes for an Advanced School on "Material•Instabilities in Elastic and Plastic Solids" held at the Internatio(lal Centre for Mechanical Sciences ( CISM) in Udine, Italy, September 13-17, 1999. The course was presented by 6 lecturers from 6 different countries and attended by near forty participants from 8 European countries and US. It was of course realized that the topic of materi
