“I did not understand you. Please repeat. Did you mean Erfurt?” “No, I meant Frankfurt! Frankfurt!” Do you still remember how irritating voice control systems could be in the early days? These antediluvian functions seem to be light years away from the sophisticated systems installed in today’s car models. There has been an evolution in the reliability of HMI systems and as users we should show our gratitude and our respect to the engineers for what they have achieved. However, the developments in the field of the HMI are far from over, as a look into the future indicates. Assistance and automation functions in particular will be designed to be more adaptive in vehicles. Drivers who use them must feel that they are being understood. The system must be able to anticipate their needs, feelings and circumstances. This calls for context sensitivity, which means an understanding of what is happening in and around the car. In the future, vehicle users will expect intelligent systems to improve the usability of the vehicle and algorithms with AI elements to lead to higher levels of safety. The HMI will take the form of a flexible platform with micro-services. It will be possible to continuously modify and expand the hardware, operating system, functions, display location and the display itself during the usage phase. User behavior in the field will provide information that can help improve the intuitive usability of the systems and develop the range of functions available. The number of potential personalization options will increase exponentially as a result.

In the ATZ interview, Kazuhito Imaizumi from Lexus, who was responsible for the creation of the digital door mirror for the Lexus ES, describes some of the unexpected problems that can occur during the development of new systems and the practical solutions that have been found. The guidelines were excellent image quality under all conditions, user friendliness and compliance with the requirements of legislation. Frank Jung
