“To work and to love,” those are the foundations of life, so said Freud, and as many new human service professionals enter the field, they are prepared to help their clients build resources, manage strong emotions, and learn to cope in order to establish a career and successful relationships with others. Underlying much of what a typical clinician is taught, however, is the essence that patients can learn to control their lives. What many clients, and we ourselves, fail to recognize is the impact of a chronic health crisis… one that has been described as the ultimate pulling-the-rugout-from-under experience. T
