Introduction During the last 25–30 years, there has been continuously growing interest in selfemployment and in such of its form as freelance. This article explores these phenomena on the basis of the analysis of research publications aimed at understanding modern processes and trends in the market of self-employment. The authors of this paper review studies on these economic and labour phenomena that were published mainly in the period from 1991 to 2017. The authors use the resources of the bibliometric databases Scopus and Web of Science as well as Springer portal. Based on the analysis, the authors of this review focus on defining the main trends in the development of selfemployment and freelance. The relevance and importance of this study is due to at least two reasons: at first, the lack of specially prepared literature reviews on freelance as a tool for developing a self-employment market with a focus on its innovative component; secondly, a significant increase in the number of publications on self-employment and freelance in the twenty-first century.
