Foreword The whole story began on Nov 20, 2013, when I received an email from Professor Arne Bathke. He asked me and a colleague of mine if we were interested in analyzing an epilepsy dataset. Since the medical researchers involved in that project had got stuck due to difficulties concerning the statistical methods, they sought for help from mathematicians. To cut it short - some details can be found in the epilogue - I agreed, and so, finally, my master’s thesis evolved from this medical research question.
