My interest in working on the Brazilian and Indian economies began when I was a Ph.D. student at UIUC. There I had the good fortune of coming in contact with leading Brazilianists like Professor Werner Baer who had been actively working on the Brazilian economy. I had always been interested in Latin America but it was only once I got in touch with Werner that I started looking at a comparative political economy of the two countries as a serious research topic. I started working on my book soon after I graduated in 2014. By then I was well acquainted with the literature on these two economies and I came to realize that very few studies had actually done a comparative analysis of Brazil and India in the post-1980 period. That was when I seriously started considering writing a larger manuscript on the two economies.
