Abstract Background Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare tumor that may grow to a considerable size before causing clinical symptoms. Mixed-type retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a very rare clinical entity. Methods We herein describe a rare case of a 54-year-old female who was diagnosed with a giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma arising from the right perinephric space. Results Radical nephrectomy and right salpingooophorectomy were nessecary to achieve complete tumor excision. Histological examination revealed a mixed-type liposarcoma consisting of well-differentiated and pleomorphic elements and deep invasion into the renal parenchyma, which is quite infrequent. The patient was well and diseasefree 12 months after surgery. Conclusions Mixed-type retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare tumor. Aggressive surgical resection of the tumor together with adjacent structures, if necessary, is the mainstay of treatment. Keywords liposarcoma . retroperitoneal . giant . mixed type
Introduction Soft tissue sarcomas are relatively rare neoplasms with an annual incidence of 10,000 to 10,500 in the USA [1]. They N. S. Salemis (*) : E. account for 1% of all adult human cancers, and 15% of the cases are located in the retroperitoneal space [2]. Liposarcomas are rare tumors accounting for approximately 10–15% of the soft tissue sarcomas [3] and are the most common histological subtype of the retroperitoneal tumors [2, 4–7]. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma with mixed histological pattern is a rare clinical entity. We herein present a rare case of a 54-year-old female with a giant mixed-type retroperitoneal liposarcoma arising from the right perinephric space. The diagnostic evaluation and management of the patient are discussed along with a review of the literature.
Case Presentation A 54-year-old female with an unremarkable medical and family history was admitted to our department with a 2-month history of progressive abdominal distension and dull pain mainly localized to the right abdomen. The pain had gotten worse over the previous 2 weeks and was associated by nausea and general fatigue. On physical examination, a large non-tender mass was noted mainly involving the right abdomen extending from the subhepatic region down to the right pelvis. Laboratory findings and tumor markers were within the normal range. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large inhomogeneous retroperitoneal mass of fat density extending from the subhepatic area down to the lesser pelvis d
