Preface

This book is a translation of the German textbook Vegetation der Erde (published in 2014 by Springer Spektrum, Heidelberg), with some additions and modifications to address the international readership. It developed from various lectures at the Technical University of Munich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. Research stays, particularly in South America and Africa, many excursions with colleagues and students, and expeditions to (formerly) remote areas enriched our scientific experience and provided us with the necessary material for a truly comprehensive description of the Earth’s vegetation. Our goal was to produce an up-to-date overview for both scientists and interested laypersons with a focus on the differences and common features in the z
