Graphene Research in China Kexin Chen National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing, 100085, P.R. China ABSTRACT Graphene, a monolayer of sp2-bonded carbon atoms, has been attracting worldwide interests because of its unique two-dimensional structure, various fascinating properties and a wide range of intriguing potential applications. The graphene research is very active in China and has been developing rapidly in the past few years, which covers nearly all the areas related to graphene including theories, synthesis, physical and chemical properties, and applications. Over 100 research institutions have been involved in graphene research with fast-growing project supports. In this paper, the status of graphene research in China is first discussed based on the number of publications and patents as well as the institutions involved. Then the projects and fundings from both government and companies for graphene research are briefly introduced. Finally, the highlights of graphene research in China are reviewed, which include chemical vapor deposition growth and transfer, mass production, and assembly of graphene, and its applications in energy storage, sensing, composites and solar cells. INTRODUCTION Graphene, as a rapidly rising star in nano-material science, has attracted great attentions all over the world. In a large number of countries, great efforts have been devoted to the research and development of graphene-based materials. Besides the beautiful physics, current graphene research mainly focuses on the development of scalable and controllable methods for producing high-quality graphene and the exploration of its potential applications in various areas. However, the research superiority, funding and progress vary significantly among countries. The experimental research of graphene in China started from 2007, and has been developing rapidly in the past few years. In this paper, an overview will be given with regard to the status, funding and highlights of graphene research in China. DISCUSSION Status of Graphene Research in China The first experimental paper about graphene in China was published in Chinese Physics in Nov 2007, which is about 3 years later than the first graphene paper published by A. Geim and co-workers. However, the graphene research in China has been developing very fast since 2008. According to the total number of publications in graphene (2004-2012), China ranks second with over 3,800 graphene-related papers. It is worth noting that nearly 3,000 papers have been published in 2011 and 2012, which account for over 78% of the total number. In particular, nearly 1,800 papers have been published in 2012. This number of publications ranks first in the world, and accounts for over one third of publications all over the world this year. The application studies are also very active in China. Nearly 2,700 graphene-related patents have been applied by companies and research institutions between 2004 and 2012. Samsung

Corporation and SKKU rank first and second, respectively, in the number of p
