Foreword

Groundwater is now the engine of growth in South Asia. It plays a primary role in meeting the water needs of various user sectors in India and also in its neighboring countries in South Asia. However, it does not receive the importance and emphasis that it should be receiving as an extremely important natural resource, which is under tremendous stress, worldwide and specifically in highly populated areas of South Asia. With growing awareness, the role of groundwater as a sustainable resource needs to be emphasized for our present and future generations. This effort is not possible singly, either by the academicians or by consumers, managers or decision makers, but there needs to be a concerted effort from all the stakeholders.
