These Proceedings are dedicated to the memory of Jose Luis Rubio de Francia (1949 - 1988)

INTRODUCTION These are the Proceedings of the Conference on Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, held in El Escorial, Spain, from June 9 to June 13, 1987. It was the third Conference of its kind in El Escoriali the other two took place in 1979 and 1983. The program of the Conference included four main speakers who gave courses of three or four hours. The content of these courses is reflected in the four surveys or main lectures. Also included in these Proceedings are the ten 45-minute lectures which were of a more specialized nature. Financial support for the Conference came from several sources: the Universidad Aut6noma de Madrid, the CAICYT of the Spanish Government (Grant 2805/83) and the U.S.-Spanish Joint Committee for Scientific and Technological Cooperation (grant CCB-8402/058). We should like to thank CAJA MADRID for its support. We are also grateful to the town of El Escorial for its hospitality. I shared the tasks of organizing the Conference with Professors Gene Fabes, Eugenio Hernandez, Jose Luis Rubio de Francia and Jose Luis Torrea. Also a member of the Organizing Committee, and an essential one, was Caroline Bintcliffe, who acted as Secretary of the Conference. We very much regret that Jose Luis Rubio de Francia is no longer with us. He died on February 6. 1988. He was one of the greatest mathematicians in our field as well as a wonderful person who was loved by all. It is only fitting that these Proceedings should be dedicated to his memory. Let us hope that the tradition started in 1979 of holding an "El Escorial" every four years can be continued in 1991.
