PRE F ACE These Proceedings form a record of the lectures delivered at the eighth Conference on Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations which was held at the University of Dundee, Scotland during the week Monday 25 to Friday 29 June 1984. The theme of the Conference was the theory of non-linear differential equations and their relevance to the understanding of biological phenomena and non-linear wave propagation. The Conference was attended by more than 120 mathematicians from Europe, North America, People's Republic of China, Egypt, Iraq, Poland, South Africa and Sudan. The Conference was organised by R.J. Jarvis and B.D. Sleeman who thank all mathematicians who took part in the work of the Conference. The Organisers thank the University of Dundee for generously supporting the Conference; the Warden and Staff of West Park Hall for their help in providing accommodation for the Participants; Colleagues for their assistance during the week of the Conference, and the Bursar of Residences and the Finance Officer of the University of Dundee. It is a pleasure to record special appreciation of grants from the Science and Engineering Research Council and the European Research Office of the United States Army.
These grants made available travel funds for the Plenary Speakers and also
helped to provide secretarial services for the Conference. Special thanks are due to Miss Lilian Simpson and Mrs Dorothy Hargreaves, Secretaries in the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Dundee for their invaluable contribution to the work and organisation of the Conference.
