Health Canada issues Foreign Product Alerts Health Canada has issued Foreign Product Alerts advising consumers against using several health products due to potential adverse effects.1,2 Alerts have been issued for the proprietary Chinese medicines Jie Jie Pills and Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao Wan.1 The Hong Kong Department of Health and the UK MHRA have advised against the use of Jie Jie Pills as they contain aristolochic acid, which is known to cause renal failure and cancer. In addition, Clinical Toxicology reported that Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao Wan is contaminated with aristolochic acid. Due to their known toxicity, herbal products containing aristolochic acid are restricted in Canada. Health Canada has also issued Alerts for Dai Dai Hua Jiao Nang, Darling Capsules, Dali Capsules, Spanish Fly Capsules and an unnamed product.2 New Zealand’s health regulatory authority, Medsafe, has advised against the use of the later four products as they were found to contain sildenafil. Health Canada advises that sildenafil is associated with several adverse reactions, including flushing, GI disorders, headache, penile tissue damage, visual disturbances and inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose, and that products containing sildenafil should not be taken in conjunction with nitrate medication as this combination can lead to a potentially life-threatening reduction in BP. Also, Medsafe has advised against the use of Dai Dai Hua Jiao Nang as it was found to contain sibutramine.
