Infections are major causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematological malignancies, particularly in those with prolonged neutropenia and recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Successful management of infectious diseases in this setting often necessitates not only expert knowledge in infectious diseases but also expertise in diagnosis and treatment of the underlying hematologic diseases. In the hematologic setting differential diagnosis of presumed infection always includes multiple different pathogens, as bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections occur.
