Hydroquinone Allergic contact dermatitis due to sodium metabisulphite excipient: case report A 34-year-old woman developed allergic contact dermatitis 48 hours after applying a bleaching cream containing 4% hydroquinone and the excipient sodium metabisulphite [Pigmentasa; concentration of sodium metabisulphite not stated] to melasma patches on her face. The cream was discontinued, and she received steroids and antihistamines. Her symptoms resolved. Patch testing was carried out with Pigmentasa, hydroquinone and the excipients of the cream. The woman reacted to Pigmentasa and to sodium metabisulphite, with the same intensity at 48 hours and 96 hours, in both irradiated and nonirradiated areas. Her reaction was considered to be allergic contact dermatitis to sodium metabisulphite and Pigmentasa. Author comment: "The short time between the usage of the bleaching cream and the positive patch reaction indicates a previous sensitisation to sodium metabisulphite." Laureano A, et al.
