Aseptic meningitis: case report A 14-year-old girl received human IV immunoglobulin G (400 mg/kg of body weight daily) for 5 days for idiopathic thrombocytopenia. Two days following the final immunoglobulin G infusion, she developed a fever, headache, vomiting and photophobia. On examination, she displayed drowsiness, neck stiffness, and a temperature of 39.5°C. Laboratory analysis revealed a WBC count of 18 400/mm3, and a CSF cell count of 140 leucocytes/mm3 with 30% lymphocytes and 70% neutrophils. Findings were consistent with a diagnosis of aseptic meningitis. Treatment with floctafenine was initiated. Immunoglobulin G therapy was discontinued and her symptoms resolved within 3 days. Author comment: "[B]ased on the Naranjo algorithm, it is probable that aseptic meningitis in our patient was due to human intravenous IgG." Chaabane A, et al.
