Introduction
An effective and relevant literature survey has been presented in Chap. 1 on induction motor’s construction and operation. Faults in induction motor are studied along with their causes and effects. In previous chapters, faults like rotor broken bar fault, air gap eccentricity fault, rotor mass unbalance fault, stator fault, single phasing fault, and crawling have been discussed. Different mathematical tools and practical procedures to deal with faults are studied. Literature survey reveals that © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2016 S. existing techniques used for fault analysis of induction motor are mainly thermal analysis, chemical analysis, acoustic analysis, torque analysis, induced voltage analysis, partial discharge analysis, vibration analysis, and current analysis. From these, motor current analysis is very popular. In following sections, analytical tools, signals used, general discussion on induction motor fault diagnosis and research scope have been presented.

Faults, Analytical Tools and Signals Used in the Book
Faults discussed in depth in this book are broken rotor bar fault, rotor mass unbalance fault, stator winding fault, single phasing, and crawling. For diagnosis of these fault both steady-state motor current and starting current are used. Steady state current is easy to capture as it exists for long period, whereas starting current is less depended on load condition. For fault diagnosis, following analytical tools are used: fast Fourier transform (FFT), continuous wavelet transform (CWT), discrete wavelet transform (DWT), Hilbert Transform (HT), sequence component analysis, CMS rule set, Concordia analysis, radar analysis, total harmonic distortion assessment, skewness and kurtosis assessment.
