International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) activity report Preparations for the lOth Plenary Meeting in Jerusalem in August 1996 Call for nominations - Virus taxonomy up-date - Virus Database development

The organisation and membership of the ICTV The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) is the arm of the Virology Division of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) charged with developing an internationally acceptable taxonomy of viruses. A comprehensive description of the organisation, functioning and philosophy of the ICTV is given in the introductory sections of the Sixth Report of the ICTV, which has been recently published by SpringerVerlag as Supplement 10 of Archives of Virology. The Sixth Report, entitled Virus Taxonomy, extends to nearly 600 pages and provides a comprehensive account of the currently agreed taxonomy of viruses. The affairs of ICTV are conducted by an Executive Committee of eighteen members who co-ordinate and formalise the activities of the many Study Groups of expert virologists which keep virus taxonomy under constant review. Taxonomic proposals from the Study Groups are considered by the Executive Committee and ratified at the triennial Plenary Meeting of the full membership of the ICTV, or exceptionally by postal ballot. The next Plenary Meeting of the ICTV will be held in Jerusalem in August 1996 during the Course of the 10th International Congress of Virology. The full membership of the ICTV comprises the Life Members (currently 4), the Executive Committee (President, Vice-President, two Secretaries, the Chairs of the Bacterial Virus, Fungal Virus, Invertebrate Virus, Plant Virus, Vertebrate Virus, and Virus Data Subcommittees, and eight Elected Members), the National Members (currently 26) and the Chairs of the Study Groups (currently 42). The Statutes of the ICTV require that the members of the Executive Committee serve for fixed terms. The President, Vice-President, and the eight Elected Members of the Executive Committee are open to nomination and are elected by ballot at the Plenary Meeting. The two Secretaries and the Subcommittee Chairs are nominated by the Executive Committee, and the Study Group Chairs by the Subcommittee Chairs. The individual members of the Study Groups are appointed by the Study Group Chair and no formal approval is necessary. The Life Members are nominated by the Executive Committee in recognition of service to virus taxonomy. The appointment of the Life Members and the Secretaries requires the approval of the full ICTV. The National Members are nominated by national microbiological societies; up to five societies may be represented per country, but normally a single member represents each country.
