THE FOURTH ANNUAL symposium of contributed papers on quality of life evaluation was held in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 12-13,1997. This exchange of information on quality of life evaluation included some of the most innovative thinkers in the field of health related-quality of life (QOL) research and performance measurement. The theme of the plenary session was “Quality of Life in Medical Practice.” Speakers represented the disease management community, managed care, the National Committee on Quality Assurance, and the Agency for Health Cape Policy and Research. These differing perspectives resulted in a stimulating and lively discussion on the status and future of QOL in medical care. The remaining oral presentations and the posters were selected through a blinded peer review process from abstracts submitted by researchers in the field of QOL. A total of 19 papers were selected for oral presentation along with approximately 50 abstracts. Presenters were from the United States, Canada,

and Europe. They represented government, accrediting agencies, medical care settings and research institutions, disease management companies, academia, the pharmaceutical industry, contract research organizations, and clinical research institutions. Contributed papers were grouped into sessions of “Development, Validation and Interpretation of QOL,” “QOL in Observational Studies,” and “QOL in Intervention Trials.” A new session, “Quality of Life in Medical Care,” provided the opportunity to hear examples of QOL measurement in medical care settings. Also, for the first time in the history of these annual QOL symposia, a contributed workshop was featured entitled “Broadening the Role of Psychometric Analysis in Quality of Life Assessment.” The program committee gratefully acknowledges the contributions of all participants, session chairs, and peer reviewers and is pleased to include the abstracts for both the oral and the poster presentations in this issue of the journal.
