Abstract In recent years, the plans for creating new cities have been executed in many parts of Iran, aiming to provide shelter and minimize centralism. However, no comprehensive research has been conducted on the variables dealing with place attachment (PA) and community participation (CP) in these spaces. Thus, the present study attempts to pursue this goal, embarking on the use of structural equation modelling (SEM) to test a model of correlation on residents of Sadra, Iran. The survey was conducted on 604 respondents from Sadra Phase 1, and collected data were analyzed through SEM. The results indicated proper goodness of fit for the model, and the positively meaningful effect of PA on CP was also confirmed. 1 Introduction In recent years, the excessive development of urbanization and the advent of new urban scales have attracted the attention of scholars and decision-makers to the various dimensions of these phenomena, among which community participation is also a major topic of interest (Cicognani et al. 2008). Ohmer and Beck (2006) maintain that activities and strategies dealing with the participation of community members in social works have been revitalized, aiming to improve social life and group decision-making (Weil 1996; Schorr 1997; Johnson 1998). Such strategies are considered as crucial for many dependent fields such as urban services (Rich 1979), sanitary-oriented issues (Green 1986), and health care welfare promotion (Moynihan 1986). Community participation refers to society members’ involvement in the process of decision making on issues that affect their own lives. Individuals in such cases are thought of as having shared ideas, needs, and priorities. This is consistent with the definition proposed by Thomas (1995), maintaining that “community participation * Elham Hesari [email protected] Extended author information available on the last page of the article

involves the participation of community residents and affected groups as a community representative.” This definition stresses out the necessity of active involvement, which is the out spring of the mobilization of individuals’ time and energy. Thus, the primary point is to help residents believe that they can make a difference if they are involved (Wandersman and Florin 1990). On the other hand, place attachment (PA) refers to a broad term used to describe the link between the human-place as a social phenomenon. Most of the conceptions associated with this term refer to emotions, feeling, and affection as its central components (Low and Altman 1992). However, Low
