This book attempts to provide a “logical” solution to the problem of evil in roughly the same sense that Alvin Plantinga has been thought to have provided a logical solution to the problem of evil. Plantinga and I both begin by assuming there exists a God who is all good and all powerful and then we seek to determine whether the existence of such a God is logically compatible with evil. Plantinga is widely thought to have shown that an all-good, all-powerful God is logically compatible with there being some evil in our world. What I am seeking to determine is whether or not such a God is logically compatible with the degree and amount of evil that actually exists in our world. The search has been long and arduous. It began in 2013 after I had published my last book in political philosophy with Oxford and was considering what to do next. My work in ethics and political philosophy had developed through fifteen books and many more articles, and I was wondering how I might now continue that work.
