Preface

This book is the culminative product of a multi-year research project led by the Research Institute for Islands and Sustainability (hereafter RIIS) at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa. The research was titled “Conceptualizing Tosho chiiki kagaku kenkyu (Regional Science for Small Islands, or RSSI) toward a Jiritsu Model of Island Societies.” This project was funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. The project was carried out during the 2016–2018 Japanese academic years, involving faculty members in humanities and social sciences from the University of the Ryukyus. After the conclusion of the project, RIIS held an international symposium titled “Prospects and Challenges for Envisioning Regional Science for Small Islands” on March 1, 2020, where three prominent figures in international island studies were invited to join two of the project members to share and discuss key issues in the field of island studies. This book consists of seven chapters, including six papers and a discussion of current topics in island studies. In the introduction, “An Archipelagic Enunciation from Okinawa Island,” I have illuminated key Japanese terminology in the regional science for small islands
