Since the first edition of this book was written in 1991 the subject of laser material processing has grown not only in the scope of its technology and industrial application but also in the growing need for industry to be staffed by competent engineers who have some level of fluency in the application of optical energy. Thus, the aim of this edition is to be a definitive text on the basic science underlying the interaction of laser beams with matter and their application to industrial processes. This book is the product of courses given by the authors at Liverpool University, UK, and University of Michigan, USA. The authors would like to acknowledge the support they have gained from the enthusiasm of the many students who have passed through the research schools they have led at Imperial College and Liverpool University for Bill Steen and at University of Illinois and University of Michigan for Jyoti Mazumder. Many of these now run their own laser businesses, teach the subject or have found other ways of making money from
