Since the first edition of this book was written in 1991 the subject of laser material processing has grown not only in the scope of its technology and industrial application but also in the growing need for industry to be staffed by competent engineers who have some level of fluency in the application of optical energy. Thus, the aim of this edition is to be a definitive text on the basic science underlying the interaction of laser beams with matter and their application to industrial processes. This book is the product of courses given by the authors at Liverpool University, UK, and University of Michigan, USA.
