Abstract Miniaturization of the energy systems and high powered electronic devices necessitates the high capacity compact heat exchangers to dissipate the heat generated. Microchannel heatsinks (MCHS) are modern heat exchangers with the fluid flowing channels of size in microscale. These are very compact heat exchangers with higher ratios of heat transfer area to the volume. Huge research work has been going on to improve the hydraulic and thermal performance of the MCHS. This article provides the information about experimental and numerical studies that has been done on the heat transfer and its enhancement in micro-scale cooling devices. This review mainly concentrate on the heat transfer enhancement techniques in microchannel, numerical methods that has been implemented for the study of micro-channels and the parameters which effects the heat transfer rate. The recent studies on microchannel heat sink to improve its performance by geometry modifications, jet impingement, using Nano fluids, flow boiling and Magneto-hydrodynamics are thoroughly discussed in this article.
1 Introduction The energy conservation and development of alternative energy sources are the major concern in the present days. In the coming few decades, the conventional energy sources are expected to be exhausted [1, 2]. Scientists and researchers are striving on energy management issues to conserve the conventional sources of energy [3–5]. To save the conventional energy sources, the usage of renewable energy sources has to be increased and the efficiency of conventional energy systems has to be improved [6, 7]. Modern researchers focusing more on the thermal management of the energy system [8, 9]. Huge research has been done to improve the efficiency of energy systems. Miniaturization is one of the innovative methods to develop energy efficient systems [10]. Miniaturization has the great impact on heat exchangers technology and turns the heat exchangers as highly compact and most efficient. The efficiency of a heat exchanger has * T. the great influence on the overall efficiency and the life of the thermal energy system. Micro-channel heatsink is an innovative device in heat-exchanger technology. The advantages of large heat transfer area and high compactness of micro-channel heat sink make it most suitable heat dissipating device for electronic cooling application. The life of the modern high powered compact electronic components is influenced by its heat dissipation capability [11]. The life of an electronic component improved by providing efficient heat dissipating device like
