With great interest, we have read your article “Accuracy of stereolithographically printed digital models on plaster models” (Camardella et al., J Orofac Orthop 2017, 78: 394–402). Undoubtedly, the introduction of 3D printing into clinical orthodontics is one of the greatest technological advances in recent years. Thereby the establishment of aligner systems was possible both on an industrial scale and in practice. The scientific evaluation of these new processes is important in order to further optimize the technologies in the critical debate. The presented work is methodologically sophisticated and the measured results undoubtedly correct. Even in the title, however, the term “stereolithography” should be correctly replaced by “digital light processing (DLP)”. No 3D printing system is devoid of deviations, and even in early publications specific discrepancies with the underlying CAD data are observed with objects produced by means of stereolithography.
