Letters to the Editer To the Editor: Screw Dislocations
in 1-2-3 YBCO
We read with interest an item on page 6 in the Research/Researchers départaient of the June 1991 MRS Bulletin about screw dislocations in 1-2-3 YBCO superconductors. We at Du Pont discovered screw dislocations in bulk La-Sr-Cu-O, and this information was published in Science more than a year ago (P.L. Gai and E.M. McCarron, Science, 247,1990, p. 553). Using detailed électron microscopy, we interpreted the defects as partial screw dislocations at the surface. Their concentration increased with increased Sr doping. We also made some prelirninary magnetic flux measurements on samples containing différent defect densities, which imply that thèse dislocations enhance flux pinning. Please see P.L. Gai, M. Kunchur, E.M. McCarron, in Defects in Materials, edited by P.D. Bristowe, J.E. Epperson, J.E. Griffith, and Z. Liliental-Weber (MRS Proceedings Vol. 209,1991) p. 883. Introduction of such defects may, therefore, provide a simple (and safe) chemical alternative to irradiation. P.L. Gai Du Pont Central Research and Development Wilmington, DE
