LEVERAGING THE INTERNET TO DELIVER DRAMATIC COST EFFICIENCIES: WEBCASTING IN CLINICAL RESEARCH ELLISWILSON,JR, RPH, MSA Development Project Manager. CNS, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, Wilrnington, Delaware
Conducting clinicul reseurch is a communication-intensive process requiring considerable integration between industn sponsors, phvsician investigntors, contract research organizations. and investigarive site personnel. A number of approaches. including investigators ’ meetings. have been embraced in an effort to meet training and communication objectii>es. Can the Internet, and in particular Webcasting, be leveraged to meet these objectives while delivering dramatic cost eficiencies? This paper provides a thorough and practical review of Webcasting in clinical research, including developing a detailed request f o r proposal, selecting the optinial Webcasting partner; communicating tcith investigative sites, hardwcrre/sofrnare specifications, strutegies on seciirit\: mid contingency planning. The dramatic cost efficiencies over truditiorial investigators ’ meetings and the new flexibilities offered through the availability of an archived event on a secure Web site are highlighted. Additionally a carejiil arid candid examination of the pros and cons of the Webcasting pla!fom.for deliiiering investigators ’ meetings is offered. INTRODUCTION USING INVESTIGATORS’ MEETINGS as a training platform and kick-off for clinical trials is a traditional part of clinical drug development. The Webcasting platform for delivering investigators’ meetings represents a significant paradigm change in this tradition. The impact of technology on discovery, expanding exponentially both the quality and
quantity of the discovery pipeline, stretches clinical research resources and forces us to critically reevaluate how we conduct business. The traditional delivery of investigators’ meetings and the associated expenses cannot escape this reevaluation. All process change and application of technology should be driven by the business need. Webcasting as a delivery platform for investigators’ meetings meets several critical business needs:
