Life Lessons of a Failure Analyst Available Now
Ó ASM International 2016
‘‘It is very difficult to assure that metallurgical and materials evaluations are a regular part of the design process for most systems. My experience suggests that materials considerations are often a backfit that is too little too late to assure project success.’’ Now available for purchase through ASM International, the new book Life Lessons of a Failure Analyst is a compilation of 45 editorials from the Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention that were written over a 12-year period by Dr. McIntyre R. Louthan, Jr., FASM. Louthan was the editor-in-chief of the journal from its start in 2001 until 2012. The topics of these editorials are applicable to failure analysts, as well as any others looking to achieve success in almost any career. Each editorial offers practical advice for the failure analyst on topics including team participation, customer relations, and looking beyond the obvious for answers, just to name a few. The editorials focus on learning good communication skills, leadership, and strength in character from a seasoned failure analysis professional, presented through entertaining personal stories. Dr. Louthan is a consulting scientist in the Savannah River Technology Center of the Westinghouse Savannah River Co. He is also an instructor of the popular ASM course Metallurgy for the Non-MetallurgistTM. He has 40 years of experience in materials selection and qualification for advanced nuclear systems, failure analysis, applied and fundamental research, and teaching. Previous assignments have included: manager of Metals and Ceramics Research Group at SRL; professor of materials engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute; adjunct professor for ASM International’s Materials Engineering Institute; consultant for industry, national laboratories, and
the legal profession; and engineer/scientist for contractors to the U.S. Department of Energy. A sample editorial from the book has been included below as a preview. This editorial entitled ‘‘In Defense of the Metallurgist’’ appeared in the June 2001 issue of

In Defense of the Metallurgist The metallurgical/materials engineer is frequently blamed when a material fails in service. ‘‘Two thousand years of metallurgy and the profession remains a black art!’’ ‘‘Why can’t the metallurgist select appropriate materials?’’ and ‘‘Hasn’t the materials industry developed anything that works?’’ are statements made and questions asked after a failure. Before the failure occurs, the statements and questions are vastly different: ‘‘We don’t need a metallurgical review of this project.’’ ‘‘Isn’t there anything cheaper we could use?’’ and ‘‘Could you give us an evaluation of the materials we selected within the next two hours?’’ It is very d
