It is with great pleasure that I pen this foreword to Lung Stem Cell Behavior. The field of stem cell biology and behavior is moving extremely rapidly as the concept and potential practical applications have moved from theoretical concepts into human clinical trials with often outstanding results and has thus entered the mainstream. Despite this worldwide intensity and diversity of endeavor, there remain a smaller number of book volumes that are focused almost entirely on the behavior of stem cells, and this volume is an example of this kind of books that also brings the novel scientific findings of most of the leaders of this research field together. The concept of stem and progenitor cells has been known for a long time. However, it was the progress toward embryonic stem cells which truly leads the field of stem cell research and related field such as regenerative medicine.
